Nocturnal “night owls” are more at risk of dying than “larks” who turn in early and leap out of bed when the sun rises, new research has shown.

Night owls stay up late but struggle to drag themselves out of bed in the morning.

Scientists who studied a population of nearly half a million Britons found that over a six-year period, owls had a 10% greater risk of death than larks.

The international chemical weapons watchdog’s report on the Salisbury nerve agent attack is expected to be revealed later, as a diplomatic battle continues to rage between the UK and Russia.

Former double agent Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia were poisoned with a nerve agent thought to have been ordered by Moscow more than a month ago, leaving the pair seriously ill in hospital.

A report into allegations of sexual abuse and exploitation at a boys’ hostel and a residential school in Rochdale linked to the late politician Cyril Smith is to be published.

The former Liberal MP is said to have been among those who preyed on youngsters at Cambridge House Boys’ Hostel and Knowl View School.

The Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse (IICSA) will release its findings on the claims surrounding the two establishments and others in the town where child placements were arranged or provided by Rochdale Borough Council.
