AS children across England take their SATs, campaigners have warned the tests are leaving youngsters “terrified of failing” and issued a fresh call for them to be scrapped.

The current system is “inhibiting children’s learning”, with revision classes “dominating the timetable”, according to the More than a Score campaign.

Schools minister Nick Gibb said the Key Stage 2 tests “play a vital role” in ensuring children have a good grounding in reading, writing and maths, and the government “trusts schools not to put undue pressure on pupils”.

NHS trusts in England spent more than £1.4 billion last year on temporary nursing staff due to shortages, a study has found.

The bill was enough to pay the salaries of an estimated 66,000 newly qualified nurses, and more than fill the 38,000 existing vacancies in nursing jobs, a report by The Open University claims.

Temporary agency and bank nurses were brought in to plug the gaps in staffing for a total of 79 million hours last year – and were paid 61% above the hourly rate of a newly qualified nurse.

THOUSANDS of UK and international media will be heading to Windsor ready to immerse themselves in royal wedding fever.

Some 79 international networks ranging from as far afield as Australia, New Zealand and Japan will be reporting from the Berkshire town as Prince Harry marries Meghan Markle this weekend.

Broadcasters from across the globe have been preparing for months for the ceremony on Saturday May 19, with intense interest in the American bride, who lived for a time in Toronto, coming from the US and Canada.

THE police headquarters in Indonesia’s second largest city was attacked on Monday by suspected militants who detonated explosives from a motorcycle.

It came a day after at least eight people were killed in suicide bombings at three churches in the city by members of one family.

CCTV footage shows a car and two motorcycles approaching a security checkpoint at the police complex in Surabaya followed by an explosion from one of the motorbikes with at least two people aboard.
