SIX talented schoolchildren are celebrating success in the Dudley Writer of the Year competition.

The junior scribes beat off stiff competition from dozens of fellow borough primary school pupils to collect awards in categories for fiction, non-fiction and poetry.

Ellie Walters from Withymoor Primary School, won first prize in the fiction category in the seven to nine age group, while her classmate Ethan Skidmore came up trumps in the non-fiction category.

William Barron from Greenfield Primary School took the poetry prize home.

In the nine to 11 age group, the non-fiction award went to Torsten Penny Phillips from Greenfield Primary School, Sadie Richardson from St Mary’s CE Primary School was crowned the fiction winner and Riley Primer from Belle Vue Primary School won the poetry category.

Sadie also won the overall prize for her piece, which was about a lighthouse.

The awards ceremony, which was attended by the 18 finalists, took place at Hagley Golf Club on Monday (July 2).
