A CONCERNED councillor fears it is only a matter of time before someone is killed on a "dangerous" Dudley road.

Councillor Steve Waltho has urged Dudley Council to introduce safety measures on the busy Oakham Road after the latest smash saw two teenagers taken to hospital.

The car had crashed into a lamppost on Friday evening and firefighters were forced to cut the roof off the vehicle to free the front seat passenger.

She was taken to Russells Hall Hospital with hand and leg injuries while the driver, who had got out of the car unaided, was taken to Sandwell Hospital with cuts to his face and a hand injury.

Police were also at the scene but have confirmed they will not be investigating the cause of the crash.

Cllr Waltho said he believed the "time really has come for action", adding: "It's a disaster waiting to happen."

He continued: "I think I'm a confident driver but the junction of Oakham Road and Tansley Hill Road is one of the most dangerous that I regularly encounter.

"Turning out of there towards Dudley, there's a 90 degree bend and coming from the Tividale direction, there's a long stretch that's a magnet for speeding.

"It's a 30mph road but they do 40, 50, 60mph when there's noone in front of them.

He said residents claim to witness at least one incident a week, adding: "We've tried to persuade council officers of the danger, fear and frustration that residents are encountering but sadly there are no proposals for action to date.

"Residents have suggested certain measures - including traffic lights at the junction and calming measures along the Oakham Road - but we're told that certain 'criteria' need to be met.

"We don't want fatalities to be that criteria."

Along with his fellow ward councillors Shaukat Ali and Shaneila Mughal, cllr Waltho has vowed to lobby the relevant council officers to review the situation once more.

Cllr Waltho added: "They have put cosmetic measures in place, like an anti-skid surface in parts but they need something to slow them down."
