DUDLEY Council has been given a funding boost to provide home adaptations for disabled people living in private accommodation.

The authority has received an additional £661,000 of Government funding for its borough-wide Disabled Facilities Grant, which helps people living with a disability living independently in privately owned or rented homes who are struggling with day to day life due to their condition.

It can fund alteration costs for home improvements such as level access showers, ramps, domestic lifts and extensions to provide access for safe bathing and sleeping.

Those who are eligible, based on a referral from an Occupational Therapist and a mandatory financial assessment, can apply for a grant to meet the cost of their adaptation.

Councillor Keiran Casey, cabinet member for housing and residents welfare, said: "We care passionately about the welfare of local residents, so we are very pleased we will be able to use this additional funding to help more people with disabilities continue to live independently in their own homes.

"This funding supplements our ongoing annual budget and will allow us to continue our successful delivery of the grant programme.”
