A hair design which involved an electrical installation of festive lights has seen two Coleg Llandrillo students win a UK-wide online competition.

Friends Rachel De La Hoyde, from Llandudno, and Natalie Jones, from Old Colwyn, were “absolutely delighted” to come first in the Habia online competition out of hundreds of entries.

The pair took home a £100 voucher, and a brow kit from Gerrard International.

Both of the students are studying in the Hairdressing Level 1 course at the college’s Rhos-on-Sea campus.

Mrs De La Hoyde, who was previously a care worker for 10 years, thought of the initial design concept, before asking her friend and classmate Mrs Jones to create the design on her head.

Mrs De La Hoyde said: “We were thrilled to win the competition, especially as it was open to everyone in the UK.

"I knew my competitive streak would pay dividends one day.”

She always wanted to be a hairdresser, and now that her daughter is in full-time education, she is fulfilling her dream.

Mrs Jones, who made her friends creative ideas a reality, has a son with disabilities, so she too had to wait for the right time to return to education.

Previously a supermarket worker, like Mrs De La Hoyde, she had always dreamed of becoming a hairdresser.
