An elderly driver suffered serious injuries in a car crash in Quinton yesterday.

A car left the road, hit a lamp post and ended up in trees at the island at junction 3 of the M5 motorway - just after midday.

An elderly man who was driving the car when it crashed at the island, which is at the junction of Manor Way and the A456, was taken by ambulance to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham with serious injuries.

A middle aged couple who were passengers in the car were also taken to hospital, but suffered less serious injuries.

West Midlands Ambulance Service's communications director Murray MacGregor said: "A car left the road, hit a lamp post and travelled some distance before ending up in trees.

"Three patients were assessed at the scene. The driver was an elderly man - he was assessed and treated at the scene and was taken on blue lights to the QE hospital.

"He was in a serious condition."

A spokesman for West Midlands Police said "the car hit the roundabout after a man was taken ill at the wheel."

There were tailbacks at the scene as emergency services dealt with the crash.
