A SCHOOLGIRL from Wollaston hit upon a swimmingly good way to support her older sister's charity mission - and she raised more than £1,000 in the process.

Alexa Denton, 12, and her friend Harriet Gadd, 11, have raised £1,087 and counting towards the Luna's Legacy fund set up by Alexa's sister Hannah Swancott.

Luna's Legacy was created by Hannah and husband Quinn in memory of their stillborn daughter in a bid to raise enough funds to build a specialist bereavement suite for Russells Hall Hospital.

The lack of such a suite at the hospital meant Hannah had to give birth on a normal ward - and that has driven her to raise funds so other couples avoid that heartbreaking experience.

Redhill School pupils Alexa and Harriet each swam 5km - a whopping 150 lengths of their local pool - in less than two hours to further boost the fund.

Altogether, Luna's Legacy has now raised more than £37,000 since being set up last summer.
