The 23-year-old, of no fixed address, is believed to have used a metal strip from a broom which had been sharpened in order to attack his fellow prisoner in a shower block after the pair had argued about a DVD player.

Police have confirmed that the 33-year-old victim - who was serving a five-year sentence for grievous bodily harm - was stabbed once at around 6.15pm on Tuesday, January 22, with what was described as an ‘improvised weapon’.

Mr O’Donnell made his way to his cell to raise the alarm and was rushed to Warrington Hospital, but was pronounced dead shortly before 8pm.

Detective inspector Nigel Reid, who led the investigation, said: “Today, Gray has pleaded guilty to murder and in doing so has spared Stephen’s family the ordeal of having to sit through a trial.

“Our thoughts remain with them at this incredibly difficult time and we continue to support them throughout this process.

“A dedicated team of detectives have been working as part of this investigation to build a case and secure justice for Stephen and his family.

“I hope that today’s outcome provides them with some comfort.”

Mr O'Donnell, from Stockport, was described as a ‘lovely man who was adored by his family and friends’ in the wake of his death earlier this year.

In a statement, his family said: “Our hearts are broken at the loss of our beloved Stephen - he was a lovely man who was adored by his family and friends.

“He didn’t deserve to be taken from us in this way, but nobody can take away the memories that we have of him which we will always treasure.

“We ask that our privacy be respected at this time while we come to terms with our terrible loss.”

A number of members of Mr O’Donnell’s family were present as Grey admitted his murder.

Campaigners also held a candlelit vigil outside the category C Warrington Road prison following the killing.

Defence barrister Richard Littler told the court that his client has ADHD and is prone to ‘impulsivity and mood swings’, and that the fatal stabbing - which was captured on CCTV - had followed an argument concerning a DVD player.

Gray - who appeared via video link to HMP Altcourse wearing a dark grey jumper and with long, curly black hair - will be sentenced back at Liverpool Crown Court on the morning of Monday, May 20.
