GORNAL'S chip shops have been rated by a group of young Cub Scouts.

The Cubs from 1st Upper Gornal Scout group took part in their first Annual Chippy Hike, led by Scout Leader Neil Watts.

The youngsters, aged between eight and ten years old, walked from Lower Gornal to their hall at St Peter's Church in Upper Gornal, stopping at every chippy along the way.

The group of 17 youngsters dropped in at Village Fisheries, Gornal Fryer and Nemo's in Lower Gornal, and Charlie's and Kents Tuck Inn in Upper Gornal.

After ordering a regular bag of chips, the cubs rated each chip shop based on the look of the chips, taste of the chips, portion size, friendliness of staff and cleanliness of the shop.

Neil said: "I thought we could go for a walk and combine it with one of the favourite hobbies- eating chips!

"They were really good and all loved it.

"The shops were, without exception, incredibly welcoming and really entered into the spirit of the occasion."

At the end of the chip shop hike the Cubs totted up the scores and after a close battle Charlie's, based on Jews Lane, was crowned the winner.

Staff at the Upper Gornal chippy were presented with a certificate by Cubs Connor, Analeece and Josh.

Neil added: "We look forward to doing the hike again next year!"
