PLANS to extend a beer garden at a town centre pub have been turned down.

JD Wetherspoon wanted to convert the existing plant bed at the Looking Glass pub, on Buttermarket Street, into a paved drinking space.

During last Wednesday’s development management committee meeting, Cllr Judith Wheeler called for the existing plant bed to be preserved.

She said: “We have got planters but we have not got very much green space in the centre of Warrington.

“There is plenty of outside drinking space in Warrington, elsewhere.”

Cllr Bob Barr supporter Cllr Wheeler’s views.

He added: “I think we have to do everything we can to preserve what very little we have.”

Ahead of the meeting, planners said the potential loss of trees could cause ‘further visual impact’ on the character and appearance of this part of the town centre.

The application was refused.
