A cruise ship from Germany docked in Portland Port today.

The 42,289-ton AIDAvita is the fifth cruise ship to dock in the port this season.

With a maximum capacity of 1,266 people, it is one of the smaller cruise vessels run by German cruise line AIDA Cruises.

The ship is on a 14-day trip to the UK, having departed from Hamburg on May 10 and arriving at Portland after Dover.

It will go on to visit Cork, Belfast, Dublin, Liverpool, Glasgow, Fishguard and Le Havre before returning to Hamburg on May 24.

AIDA Cruises is owned by Carnival Corporation and is Europe’s largest German cruise line.

It was founded in 1960 and was acquired by P&O Princess Cruses in 2000 before merging with Carnival Corporation in 2003.

Their ships are staffed both by humans and by Peper robots.

These robots greet passengers and provide them with information while on their cruise.

The technology was introduced to the ships in 2016.

AIDA ships will dock in Portland throughout the cruise ship season, with the next one, the AIDAaura, due in on May 17.

Other ships in its fleet include the AIDAcara and AIDAmira, the former of which will also dock in Portland this yea
