Also protesting was the group Save The Area North of Dorchester, known as STAND.

One of the ‘preferred options’ in West Dorset’s local plan is to build 3,500 new homes on land to the north of Dorchester.

The group STAND strongly opposes this and is concerned about the impact of the development on the local landscape and its heritage.

Kate Hebditch of STAND said: “We are here to ask the new council to look again at housing provision across the whole county. With a new council there is a chance to do things differently than before.”

David Gargrave, also of STAND, added: “We are particularly keen that they retain the northern aspect of Dorchester with its wonderful water meadows and outstanding views.

“We believe that any development on that side of the town is unacceptable.

“We want to protect Dorchester for future generations. We believe the current infrastructure is inadequate, but the addition of 3,500 houses will make things worse.”
