A WOMAN fought against the pain of her incurable condition to raise over £10K for charity.

Sylvia Herring, from Hedge End, took on a two-day 100km running challenge in Oxfordshire with ten work colleagues and friends to raise money for Scleroderma & Raynaud’s UK charity.

Despite having systemic sclerosis, meaning her immune system attacks the body’s tissues causing fatigue, muscle wasting, joint pain and acid reflux, the deputy branch manager of Cosham's Selco Builders Warehouse battled two gruelling days and managed to raise £10,428 for the charity.

The Race to the Stones running challenge starts in Oxfordshire, with the finish line situated next to the Avebury Stone circle in Wiltshire, and is equivalent to 62 miles.

Taking almost 12 hours to complete the 50km route on the first day, she made it to just over halfway of the route during day two where she "simply couldn't continue".

Sylvia said: “It’s an extremely testing event for even the fittest people so I always knew that it was going to be very difficult for me to complete. It took me nearly 12 hours to finish the 50km on day one and it reached the stage just over halfway through day two where I simply couldn’t continue.

"It was an emotional two days. There were lots of tears and times when I was sobbing uncontrollably.I was frustrated with myself that I couldn’t get to the end but, by the same token, I know that I pushed myself to the absolute limits. I’m so grateful to the 10 people who signed up to take on the challenge with me and everyone who sponsored me.”
