KIND-HEARTED Oldbury school pupils have blown away their teachers with their generosity - helping donate more than 2,000 items to the needy.

Youngsters at Perryfields High donated items of food and toiletries instead of paying £1 towards a non-uniform day, as part of a reverse advent calendar scheme.

Their generosity amazed their teachers - with thousands of items donated.

One teacher's dad donated £100 to buy warm clothing as he was once homeless himself and local firm Beeswift Ltd donated 50 Thinsulate hats and 50 pairs of Thinsulate gloves.

The items were given to charities Leslie’s Care Packages and the Midland Langar Seva Society as well as needy people in the local community.

Vanessa Oldacre, joint head of religious studies at the Oldacre Road school, said pupils had been learning about social injustice and how they can have an impact on the world.

She said: "We are incredibly proud and overwhelmed by the generosity of our Perryfields community who have united to demonstrate these shared values to help those less fortunate than ourselves.

"Over 2,100 donations will be shared between local charities including Leslie's Care Packages and Midland Langar Seva Society who support the homeless and vulnerable in the West Midlands."

Its pastoral co-ordinator Sarah Shaw said: "The students have been totally inspired by this scheme and have enjoyed bringing in their donations, knowing that they are making a real impact on the lives of those people within their own communities who aren't as fortunate as they are.

"Their generosity and selflessness has been incredible. "

Some of the items were put into hampers, which were donated.
