COUNCILLORS have approved proposals to ‘enormously enhance’ Victoria Park as part of plans to create a new rugby league centre of excellence.
Warrington Borough Council’s application to develop an artificial grass pitch at the site, off Knutsford Road, was approved by the development management committee on Wednesday.
Floodlights, fencing and entrance gates also form part of the project, as well as a sheltered cycle park.
The 3G pitch will replace a grass rugby league pitch at the park and be located to the east of the existing Victoria Park Stadium.
Committee member Cllr Bob Barr (LD – Lymm North and Thelwall) said members should commend the council for the scheme to ‘enormously enhance’ the park, adding it will turn it into a ‘much better’ facility.
The council hopes it will improve grassroots sports development.
The 3G pitch has been identified for Rugby League World Cup 2021 Legacy Funding, as part of plans to create a new community centre of excellence for rugby league.
The council believes the project will deliver ‘genuine benefits’ in relation to sports engagement and ‘serve to further enhance the excellent sporting offer’ it provides to the community.
