What is your response?Pupils and staff at Roman Way First School enjoyed dressing up as book characters for World Book Day. They went on a troll hunt. The children found a footprint and a note that he’d left. All children were tasked with the job of being authors of a piece of descriptive writing to inform local residents about the visitor. Aimee in Miss Chamberlain’s class (Year 1/2) wrote about the troll being ‘friendly because he lets children play in the trees which grow out of his head’ where as Lilly-May ended her character description with ‘he might like to eat people so watch out!’

What is your response?Pupils at Kidderminster’s Holy Trinity School and Sixth Form Centre in celebration of World Book Day (WBD), Thursday 5th March, dressed up as their favourite ‘Story Heroes’ and held a ‘Preloved Book Swap’ for the school’s younger children who each selected a book of their choice to take home for free. This year’s celebrations began with the WBD ‘Share a Story’ campaign which runs from Thursday 27th February all the way through to Sunday 29th March, with all pupils receiving a £1 World Book Day voucher to be exchanged for one of twelve specially published texts available from major supermarkets and bookshops or used at the school’s Book Fair at the end of the month. Associate Head for Phase 1 Reading and Phonics, Katherine Slack, said: “Each year we try to vary how we celebrate World Book Day and this year our theme is ‘Story Heroes’ with all pupils from Reception to Year 8 and staff encouraged to dress up as a hero or heroine from a book, comic or graphic novel. Older pupils have been asked to select a quote spoken by their chosen hero, which will be displayed in school. This year the school has also registered to take part in World Book Day ‘Share a Story’ campaign which aims to share a MILLION stories during World Book Day month.†The day also included creative comic strip and superhero bookmark competitions and a World Book Day Superhero themed lunch of Marvel pork meatballs and Spiderman spaghetti, Superman vegetable burgers with Incredible potatoes, Green Lantern peas, Captain America carrots and Super Power chocolate cake. Local artist and cartoonist, Geoff Tristram, delivered entertaining and instructive workshops to aspiring illustrators and a school governor shared why there is nothing better to read than children’s literature. Added Miss Slack: “Sharing stories in school and at home should be as non-negotiable as feeding your child. Even if your child is struggling to develop their reading skills, nurture their love of stories and your child will be motivated to persevere.â€

What is your response? The children at Kidderminster’s Little Trinity Nursery shared a wonderful week and dressed up as their favourite book character to celebrate World Book Day on Thursday 5th March. Nursery Manager, Gaynor Carter, said: “Each class throughout the week focused on their favourite stories. “Yellow Bumble Bee room enjoyed 'Going on a Bear Hunt' and 'Dear Zoo' whilst our Red Ladybird room enjoyed reading ‘The Enormous Turnip’, ‘Elmer’ and ‘Who am I asked the Butterfly?’ with activities including going on a minibeast hunt, looking at the butterfly lifecycle and preparing a butterfly garden ready for the baby caterpillars when they finally arrive in a few weeks’ time.†They also enjoyed story sacks and mirror play, looking at similarities and differences as well as taking part in role play activities using facemasks and using the 'Bear Hunt' tuff tray for small world play as well as enjoying a Superhero themed lunch. In a week-long celebration of books, ninety-four children took part with the highlight being children and staff dressing up as their favourite characters on World Book Day. Added Gaynor: “We celebrate World Book Day every year because language, literacy and communication is such a vital part of a child’s learning and story time is very often their favourite time of the day. “Encouraging reading and enjoyment of books is part of our weekly activities, with our lending library offering the children a chance to choose a book that they can then take home and share with their families. World Book Day is a great excuse to simply have fun, share stories, enjoy a favourite book and dress up. What an amazing week!†Image details from L to R: Little Trinity Nursery children 3-year old Oliver Need, 4-year old Felicity Janes and 3-year old Harry Parsons having fun on World Book Day.
