A POPULAR Oldbury teacher with multiple sclerosis died after suffering complications following a stem cell transplant - an inquest has heard.

Hayley Guest, aged 30, died at Sandwell General Hospital on January 24 after undergoing chemotherapy and a stem cell transplant at a hospital in Hammersmith in November 2019.

Mrs Guest, a married-mum-of-two was a much-loved teacher at Oldbury Academy with tributes pouring in on the school's Facebook site after her death.

An inquest at the Black Country Coroners' Court in Oldbury heard today (Tuesday April 28) that Mrs Guest, of Park Avenue, Rowley Regis, was admitted to hospital on January 18 after having symptoms for five days of being generally unwell with swollen lymph nodes, weight loss and a cough and temperature.

Her condition deteriorated and she went into intensive care and was put onto respiratory support.

The inquest heard that she suffered multiple organ failure and sadly died on January 24.

A post mortem found Mrs Guest, whose maiden name was Gryckiewicz, had suffered sepsis and post-transplant lymphoproliferative disorder (PTLD) after her stem cell transplant.

Area coroner for the Black Country, Joanne Lees, said she would record a short narrative conclusion that "Mrs Guest died from complications following a stem cell transplant."

Mrs Lees added: "I would like to offer my sincere condolences to the family of Mrs Guest."

Secondary school Oldbury Academy, in Pound Road, posted a tribute to Mrs Guest which read: "She made a huge difference to so many and will be missed by all of the Oldbury Academy community.

"Thank you Hayley for all you did to help our young people.

"Our thoughts are with your family and loved ones. Rest in peace."

More than £1.6k was raised for the MS Society and the Multiple Sclerosis Trust in her memory.
