THEY say timing is everything, so landlords James Lovett and Louise Andrews must have been wondering what they’d done to deserve the lockdown that followed roughly three weeks after the grand reopening of the Coach & Horses.

The pub in Worcester’s Upper Tything dates back to the 1700s – not that that was the reason for the facelift – and James says undoubtedly the most memorable moment was when the pub was finally allowed to reopen its doors following the refurbishment.

James and Louise have only been running the pub since November last year, so it would be fair to say that last few months have been some of the most challenging of their careers.

And it’s not the first time the pub, whose very name confirms it was a well-known coach house, has faced problems – it also survived an arson attack in the 19th century.

But in the 21st century, backed by shift leader Jessie Beard and a bar team of Emma Purser, Millie Mayor and Cerys Danks, James and Louise have faced the coronavirus challenge head on, even if it has meant several changes.

James said: “The way things are at the moment means that only bar snacks available including fresh choice of rolls available daily, however in the coming winter will be looking to introduce Sunday roasts.

“We have weekly (Saturday) live music acts all lined up in four weeks advance (obviously Covid-19 permitted).”

And there are also plans for the future.

James said: “There is no beer garden at present however we will be looking to build a rear terrace over the next 18 months, we do have tables and chairs outside of the front of the property.

“We don’t have any sports/pastimes teams based at the pub as of yet but we are confident of bringing the old crib team back in the near future.

“What we do have at the pub is a huge gin selection, along with our award-winning ales, of course.

“We absolutely love socialisation with our customers who we now class as our large extended friend group – listening to their stories from day to day while at the same time always offering a friendly ear to bend!

“The only real down side about running the pub is the extra hours you need to put in behind the scenes.”

And what’s the pub best known for?

“Another beer and a bacon sandwich!”
