LIVE performance is set to return to Wem next week as a popular venue hosts an outdoor trip into the past.

Soulton Hall, on the B5065, is a well-known wedding venue and home to the Soulton Long Barrow, but on Saturday, September 19, it will be welcoming the Birmingham Stage Company (BSC).

Neal Foster, from the BSC, is leading a performance of Horrible Histories: Barmy Britain, which had been set for the West End in London prior to Covid-19, and is delighted he is able to bring it to Wem.

"We're thrilled Tim Ashton and his team at Soulton Hall have stepped up to provide live theatre now that so many traditional venues are closed," he said.

"What he’s been able to arrange in a short space of time is nothing less than remarkable and we cannot wait to see it for ourselves on September 19.

"The BSC has been producing Horrible Histories shows for 15 years.

"This past summer we were due to be in the West End, but instead we’ve been playing a variety of different outdoor venues and reconnecting with audiences who have been desperately missing live theatre.

"Our Barmy Britain production features the best and worst of this great country!

"Queen Boudicca takes on the Romans, Henry VIII woos Anne Boleyn, Guy Fawkes picks on Parliament, Dick Turpin makes us pay and no-one can stop party Queen Victoria! There’s plenty in the show to entertain everyone from ages five to 105 – though 106 year olds may not like it!

"Just like the Horrible Histories books, our show has fun with all the disgusting, rude, silly and gruesome parts of history but it's all factual.

"Thank goodness Britain is barmy enough that the truth is funnier than fiction!"

There are two shows available on the Saturday – a matinée at 2pm and a later show from 4.30pm.
