STUDENTS, staff and their families from Nunnery Wood High School in Worcester took on a challenge to run, walk or cycle 100km during the month of July in order to raise funds for St Richard’s Hospice.

The school is a supporter of the hospice and during the pandemic, funding and support has become even more important.

The challenge was also a way to try and keep students active as well as being part of the school and local community during these difficult times. Students were given a sheet to record their distance on and many shared their progress on social media.

Bee Speechley, assistant headteacher said: “We were delighted that so many of our students as well as staff wanted to take part. Initially we hoped to raise £500 for the hospice, but have actually raised almost £1,000!

“We understand finances are very tight for many people currently and the generosity of our community has been overwhelming.

“Every pound counts and we had one JustGiving account that everyone could donate to, it was a team effort. Students and staff really enjoyed clocking up the distance.

“Some chose to run it all, other cycled, walked or mixed it up. I am a keen runner myself and really enjoyed completing the distance for a good cause. Other people used it as motivation to be more active during lockdown. Congratulations to everyone who took part.”

Worcester News:

Emma Telger, Head of Year 11, completed the challenge twice as she did it as part of the hospice’s event in June and again with the school in July.

She said: “I became aware that charities were going to struggle during lockdown, so I decided to complete the 100K Your Way challenge in June.

“It kick-started my love for running so much that as a school, we decided to extend the challenge for the month of July. The amount raised has been super and will support St Richard’s with their palliative care.”

Year 7 Student Dylan Harris took the challenge to another level by not only completing the distance, but sleeping outdoors for 100 nights!

He said: “I enjoyed the challenge of cycling 100km, I have cycled around Worcester and used my exercise bike. I have also slept in my tent for over 100 nights. I started this when 1st Worcester Scouts set a challenge to sleep in a tent for 30 nights, when I had completed 30 nights I decided to carry on to 50 then 100 and I have not stopped yet.

“I carried on whatever the weather, changing between a four-man tent and a beach tent and even a few nights under the stars in a hammock!

“The cycling was a harder challenge but I am proud to have helped to raise money for St Richard’s Hospice.”

Year 7 student Lilia Neath was joined by her family as she cycled the distance, even having a finish line to cross when she reached to 100km distance.
