BUILDINGS across Worcestershire, including the Abbey Stadium in Redditch, are set to light up green.

This is to help mark this year's recycle week, which begins today (Monday, September 21).

In light of the Coronavirus pandemic, the theme for this year’s campaign is Together: We Recycle.

10 buildings across the county will be coming together and going green throughout the week to mark the annual awareness campaign.

These include the Guildhall in Worcester, the Abbey Stadium in Redditch, and Evesham’s Bell Tower.

Another key factor of the campaign is taking the opportunity to say thank you to all those who have kept recycling going during the pandemic.

Councillor Tony Miller, cabinet member with responsibility for the environment at Worcestershire County Council, said: “Lockdown has been immensely difficult for everyone in the county and we are extremely grateful to all our key workers who have continued to collect and dispose of our waste at the height of the pandemic.

“Lighting up local buildings green will be a really powerful reminder of how important recycling and protecting our environment continues to be during these uncertain times.

During the pandemic, everyone has come together and helped in any way they can. We need to carry on that community spirit, when it comes to protecting our local environment. One simple change everyone can consider is thinking about recycling more and wasting less.”

The Coronavirus pandemic, and lockdown in particular has given many people an opportunity to just stop and think about many topics and aspects to our daily lives and the environment is no exception.

In a recent survey, about people’s changing attitudes to recycling after coming out of lockdown, 73 per cent of people interviewed are prepared to change their lifestyles to help the environment.
