A NETHERTON man and his nephew are both facing life prison sentences for brutally killing a 32-year-old man at a flat in Oldbury.

Derek Brennan, aged 33, and Daman Sehra, aged 23, were both convicted of murdering Amjad Khan at the end of their trial at Wolverhampton Crown Court.

The jury retired for eight-and-a-half hours to consider the evidence before returning their guilty verdicts on a charge of murder which they had both denied.

Brennan, of Halesowen Road, Netherton, and Sehra, of no fixed address, were both further remanded in custody until October 21 by Judge Michael Chambers QC.

The only sentence that can be passed for murder is life imprisonment with the judge now having to decide just how long they will both have to spend behind bars.

The two men were cleared by the jury on a charge of attempting to cause grievous bodily harm with intent and another of assault causing actual bodily harm.

The trial was told the pair went to the flat in Yardley Close, Bristnall Fields, and they savagely attacked Mr Khan who was repeatedly struck on the head with a bottle and a child's toy.

Police officers went to the flat as the result of a 999 call and they found Mr Khan lying in a pool of blood. and he was quickly rushed to hospital.

But despite the hard work of surgeons he died five days later on June 13 last year as a result of his serious head injuries.

Sehra, who admitted a charge of manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility, maintained he had gone "berserk" after Mr Khan had told his mother to take off her clothes in exchange for drugs.

Brennan stressed it was Sehra who had lost control and he was behind the killing. He added that he left the flat through a window because he did not want anyone to think he was responsible for the terrible attack.

The judge will consider the minimum sentences Brennan and Sehra will face when they both return to the court for the case to be finalised.
