A TOP local vets practice is warning cat and dog owners of the dangers of antifreeze as temperatures plummet.

Drivers in particular have been told to watch out when they are topping up with anti-freeze or using de-icer on windscreens.

The big concern is spillages, because antifreeze is not just very toxic, it also tastes sweets so it’s a big temptation for pets, especially cats.

Dr Fiona Allsop, a medicine certificate holder at Blacks Vets, which has practices in Dudley, Sedgley, Lye, Quinton and Oldbury, is warning owners of the threat to their animals.

“Many people do not realise how toxic antifreeze is and unfortunately it also tastes sweet, which can prove attractive to pets.

“Cats are particularly susceptible, as they drink from puddles and gutters, with fatal consequences if car radiator fluid has been emptied there earlier.

“We’re urging pet owners to please not leave any bottles of antifreeze unattended and to wash away any spillages as soon as possible.

“It’s also sensible to ensure dogs do not sniff and lick around puddles or damp spots on roads and pavements where it looks as though as car has recently been parked, as it’s quite likely de-icer may have been sprayed around the area.

“If you suspect your pet has ingested antifreeze or de-icer, please get in touch with your vets as soon as possible, as it can be life-threatening to animals.”
