A PLAN to site six static chalets on an existing gypsy site in Brierley Hill has sparked a raft of objections from neighbours.

The site off Delph Lane is an allocated gypsy and traveller site and currently comprises existing structures which have fallen into disrepair but a plan has been submitted to Dudley Council's planners seeking permission for a change of use of the land to permit the installation of six static chalets.

More than 80 people living nearby, however, have lodged objections to the proposal which has been branded completely unsuitable for the site - accessed off a narrow single track lane nestled behind the busy Amblecote Road.

Residents have expressed fears the scheme would bring extra traffic into the winding lane which has not footpath and is often used by schoolchildren. Worries about extra noise, pollution and a potential loss of wildlife in the quiet backwater have also been expressed.

Amblecote councillor Paul Bradley has also objected to the plan "on the grounds of the very unsuitable access road".

He said: "It is already a very busy narrow lane, almost quarter of a mile, without suitable turning or passing points. A potential extra six or more vehicles would have a detrimental impact on potential and existing residents that would lead to inevitable confrontations. Also six caravans on site is too many."

A statement submitted by building and planning consultants Berrys, on behalf of the applicant Pauline Smith, said current use of the land was "wholly private" but approval of the application would open it up for public use.

It goes on to say: "The site is free from any ecological or heritage designation and the static lodges would provide an improvement to what is currently on site. In summary, the proposed development will fulfil a need in the area and provide a gypsy and traveller site on an allocated site, as requested by the local planning authority."
