A spokesman for West Midlands Police said: "Two police officers who were passing at the time were first on the scene and joined neighbours in trying to help the people who were trapped.

"A woman in her 30s was rescued from the house by firefighters and taken to hospital suffering from smoke inhalation.

"However a man in his 50s was sadly confirmed dead at the scene along with a pet dog.

"An 18-year-old woman – who we believe is known to the man and woman - was arrested on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life.

"She is currently in custody for questioning.

"We're working with West Midlands Fire Service to establish the exact cause of the fire.

"This work will continue throughout the day."

Superintendent Phil Asquith, from Sandwell Police, said: "Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the man who sadly lost his life.

"Two of our officers were passing through the area at the time and were first on the scene. They bravely went into the address but the intensity of the fire forced them back.

"This was a traumatic situation for so many people, including neighbours and all emergency services. We're all very grateful for the support and understanding from people in the area."

West Midlands Fire tweeted: "A woman has been arrested following the death of a man at a house fire in Tame Road, Great Bridge, Tipton last night.

"Six fire crews responded, with the first arriving in under 4 minutes.

"Firefighters rescued the man, a woman and a dog. They gave CPR to the man and dog, but both sadly died at the scene.

"Our investigations into the cause are continuing. Our condolences go to everyone affected by this tragic event."

The woman was stabilised and was taken to Russells Hall Hospital.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokeswoman said: “On arrival at the scene, crews found two occupants who had been rescued from the property by fire colleagues and were being given CPR.

“One occupant, a man, was in a critical condition.

"The team of ambulance staff immediately commenced advanced life support on scene but sadly, despite the best efforts of the emergency services team, nothing could be done to save the man and he was confirmed deceased a short time later.

“The second occupant, a woman, received advanced treatment by ambulance staff who were able to stabilise her condition before she was conveyed on blue lights to Russells Hall Hospital for further emergency care.”

Two ambulances, two paramedic officers, HART paramedics and a MERIT trauma doctor and critical care paramedic attended the scene along with police and firemen.

A woman who witnessed what happened after the fire broke out said a neighbour clambered on to the flat roof of a porch and banged on a window to try to alert those inside the property.

The witness, who did not give her name, said: “There was smoke coming from the window and the back.

“Someone climbed on to the (porch) roof and was shouting.

“Then they (paramedics) were trying to help someone at the front and they put a tent up. It was just shocking.”
