PROPOSALS for new council houses on two garages sites on a Dudley road have been given the thumbs up.

Eight homes will be built across two separate sites housing garages on Corporation Road after the proposals were granted planning permission.

Seven garages on the site next to 11, Corporation Road will be demolished to make way for five homes - two semi-detached houses and three terraces.

The semis will be three-beds and the terraces will be two-beds.

The scheme was granted approval despite three letters of objection from neighbours who had concerns over the loss of garages which had been used for more than 30 years, the area already being congested and the loss of views towards Dudley castle.

Meanwhile another three two-bedroom terraces will be built on the site of a single garage next to 105, Corporation Road, which is midway along the road almost opposite the junction with Kitchener Road (see plan below).

No objections were received to this proposal.

Council planners state that both developments would "make a positive contribution to the character of the area and would not have any detrimental impact on residential amenity or highway safety."

Both proposals were submitted by Oakley Architects, working with Dudley Metropolitan Borough Council (Dudley MBC) and Harper Group.

The design and access statement for the five homes states: "Dudley MBC wish to develop the site for the provision of 5 no. new affordable rented dwellings, which comprise a mix of 3 no. 2 bedroom 4 person houses and 2 no. 3 bedroom 5 person houses, together with parking provision and landscaping.

"The intention is to create a high-quality residential development on this corner brownfield site at the junction of Corporation Road and Wolverton Road, which will deliver much needed new affordable rented homes that achieve high levels of long-term sustainability, meet the needs and expectations of the local community and sensitively respond to the surrounding context to create a small, attractive residential development."
