WEST Mercia Police have highlighted a video showing a caravan getting too close to a cyclist, as they launch a crackdown on poor driving.

The video, which appears to have been taken in Warwickshire, is shot from the cyclists helmet and shows a driver nipping past a traffic bollard, but the caravan it is towing getting very near to the cyclist.

In 2016 West Midlands Police launched the Operation Close Pass campaign, targeting drivers who passed a plain-clothed cycling officer too close.

Now West Mercia Police has launched the same campaign, saying they will take action on drivers who don't keep their distance.

Road Safety West Mercia tweeted: "Operation Close Pass is in place within West Mercia. The recommended distance for passing a cyclist is 1.5 metres, or a car’s width.

"Allow plenty of room when overtaking cyclists."

In the West Midlands Police campaign a safe pass mat was used to demonstrate to drivers they pulled over what they needed to do to comply with the law and overtake vulnerable road users safely.

And within the first 12 months of that campaign the force achieved a 20 per cent reduction in casualties amongst vulnerable road users, bucking a national trend that saw an increase that year.
