STUDENT police officers responded to an unusual call after a snake was discovered in a Quarry Bank bedroom.

Student officers Pcs Bethan Pinnock, Lucy Corles and Riane Hazel attended an address in Quarry Bank last Wednesday (September 15), after a couple reported a large snake slithering around their bedroom.

They had no idea where the snake had come from and explained they had a big item delivered the day before.

They were unsure if the snake, which was discovered to be female python, had been hiding in the box or if it had slithered in through a pipe.

While the RSPCA would usually handle this type of situation, the call came in at just after 10pm and nobody from the rescue charity was available so officers from the police's Brierley Hill professional development unit stepped in.

After a long and nervous search, the snake was found on top of a cabinet wrapped around a vanity mirror.

The officers used batons to carefully lift the yellow snake, which was around 5ft long, and place it in a shoe box with holes in.

The team contacted Manor Vets in Halesowen who cared for the snake overnight until the RSPCA were able to attend.

Vets found the python to be of a mature age with a few lumps and old injuries, but was friendly and was generally in good health.

A spokesperson for West Midlands Police said: "We’d like to say a big thanks to the Manor Vets team for helping us and to our student officers for dealing with this slippery situation so calmly without any hissssterics!"
