DUDLEY highways chiefs this week issued an urgent road closure notice for Lower Gornal due to a sink hole.

A large hole has opened up in Cinder Road and it is not safe for traffic to pass, Dudley Council has said.

The council's highways department said South Staffordshire Water commenced works on Sunday (May 15) to investigate what has happened and network manager Andrew Sumner added: "It is believed this is consequential damage from the high pressure water leakage that occurred at this location in March."

A diversion has been put in place via Stallings Lane, Wolverhampton Road and Himley Road.

Motorists are warned, however, that congestion is likely due to ongoing investigation works being undertaken by Severn Trent Water on Stallings Lane where temporary two-way signals have been installed.

Drivers are advised to seek alternative routes if possible while both traffic management systems are in operation.

The estimated end date for the repair works is Friday May 20.
