A BRIERLEY Hill heating engineer is a step closer to being crowned the champion of the trade after reaching the semi-finals of the Screwfix Top Tradesperson 2022 competition.

Ian Smith, aged 42, who owns IJS Trade Services, secured a place in the semi-final following an initial application which highlighted his passion for the trade, dedication, and commitment to going above and beyond for customers and colleagues.

Following a 13-year career at a large gas services company, Ian started his own business seven years ago with a basic tool kit and working out of the family car.

Today, he runs an award-winning plumbing and heating business with a strong customer base.

Passionate about sharing his knowledge and skills with the next generation, he’s taken on numerous apprentices over the years. He also supports heating engineer students at Dudley College, by taking them out on jobs and getting them involved in work so they can build up their portfolios.

Together with more than 30 other top tradespeople from across the UK and Republic of Ireland, Ian will now battle it out to be shortlisted as a top 10 finalist.

The shortlisted candidates will participate in a one-day final event at Screwfix LIVE, in Farnborough, on September 23, and the overall winner will take home a £20,000 prize bundle comprising tech, tools and training.
