TRIBUTES have been paid to a popular senior Cradley Heath firefighter who has died suddenly.

West Midlands Fire Service station commander Simon Wheatley, who worked at Haden Cross Fire Station, passed away yesterday.

Mr Wheatley has been described by his colleagues as "much-loved" and "respected".

The service has lowered its flags as a sign of respect.

A spokesperson for the service said on social media: "With great sadness, we confirm the sudden death of one of our much-loved and respected station commanders.

"Our deepest sympathies are with Simon's family, friends and colleagues."

Halesowen North councillor Stuart Henley, who is a firefighter, also paid tribute to Simon.

He said on social media: "Stand down Si your shift is done.

"Our hearts are heavy with the loss of a courageous firefighter who dedicated his life to saving others.

"Our deepest condolences go out to his family, friends, and fellow firefighters who are mourning his passing.

"Let us remember that it's okay to not be okay and that there is no shame in seeking help.

"You don't have to suffer in silence."
