PLANS have been lodged to convert a building in Dudley town centre into a seven-bedroom home for people with learning and mental health disabilities.

The building in Wolverhampton Street was last occupied by Kwik Fix -Vehicle Solutions Ltd and its conversion would provide a facility to support adults as they move to independent living, planning documents states.

Residents would be supervised by two staff members who would reside on-site around the clock, according to the plans which were registered with Dudley Council's planning department on March 6.

The facility would include communal dining/kitchen/laundry facilities, staff accommodation, provision of rear ramped access, cycle and car parking, bin storage facilities and installation of a lift access, a heritage and planning statement produced by MEK Town Planning and Design Consultant Ltd indicates.

The planning application seeks a change of use to the vacant property, a two-storey mid-terrace at 182-184 Wolverhampton Street last used as offices, located within Dudley Town Centre Conservation Area.

The planning and heritage statement submitted to the council's planning portal states: "The proposal would bring this vacant building into a viable use whilst optimising the much-needed specialist type of residential accommodation in this sustainable area of Dudley Town Centre."

It adds that the proposal would have an "acceptable impact on the character and appearance of the site and surrounding townscape" and would preserve the character of the conservation area.
