FOOTBALLERS Jude Bellingham and Morgan Rogers are set to receive Dudley’s highest civic honour.

The childhood friends, who grew up a few miles apart, shared the pitch together in Miami on Saturday as Bellingham's two goals sent England through to the semi-finals of the World Cup.

Bellingham and Rogers, from Stourbridge and Halesowen respectively, played starring roles in the Three Lions' victory.

Rogers tee'd up his Black Country compatriot's second goal in extra time with a shot from distance that was parried by former Aston Villa goalkeeper Orjan Nyland into the path of Bellingham, who fired home from close range.

As England prepare to face Argentina at Atlanta Stadium for a place in the final, Dudley Borough Council has named the pair among those to receive the freedom of the borough.

They will receive the honour alongside other distinguished recipients including Armed Forces veterans.

At a full council meeting on Monday July 13, councillors agreed to bestow the honour on individuals and groups who have made exceptional contributions to the borough.

Councillor Patrick Harley, leader of Dudley Council, said: "The Freedom of the Borough is the highest honour we can bestow, and it is reserved for those whose service, achievements, and dedication have made an exceptional contribution to our borough and its people.

"This year's recipients represent the very best of Dudley.

"From our armed forces veterans, who have shown extraordinary courage and sacrifice in service to our country, to community champions, sporting role models and dedicated public servants, each has made a lasting impact and brought great pride to our borough."

The council will also confer the title on councillor Shaukat Ali, former Dudley College CEO Lowell Williams, and Priory Park Boxing Club.

Former councillor Michael Evans will be named an Honorary Alderman in recognition of his long service to local government.

The Freedom of the Borough has previously been awarded to figures such as Sir Lenny Henry, Jordanne Whiley, and the late Royal Navy veteran Joe Bullock.

Cllr Harley said: "Whether through serving their country, inspiring the next generation, supporting their communities or dedicating decades to public service, these individuals and organisations have helped shape Dudley's story.

"It is only right that we recognise their achievements and celebrate the difference they have made to the lives of others.

"On behalf of the council and the people of Dudley borough, I offer my heartfelt congratulations to all those being honoured."

A civic ceremony to formally present the Freedom of the Borough and Honorary Alderman awards will take place later this year.
