DUDLEY residents will have the chance to see Exmoor ponies in Netherton next week as part of a series of walks this summer.

On Tuesday (July 15) from 10am until 11.30am walkers will have the chance to learn more about the small herd of Exmoor ponies which have joined the Murray Grey cattle on Netherton Hill.

The four ponies, which have been loaned to the reserve from the Yorkshire Exmoor Pony Trust, are part of an on going environmental grazing conservation project.

Saltwells Nature Reserve Senior Warden, Mark Williams, explained why the ponies are so vital to the reserve.

He said: “Exmoor ponies do such a good job and we have the right habitat for them on Netherton Hill.

“They have joined our six Murray Grey Cattle as they work well together.

“The two graze differently as the cattle prefer longer grass where as the ponies prefer short grass as they can nibble it with their teeth.

“Once the cattle have finished grazing and move on the ponies then come along and have what the cattle didn’t want.

“It leaves a lovely mosaic of long and short grass on the hill which then brings in all sorts of wildlife and insects.

“The cattle and pony grazing triggers off a whole chain of animals visiting the reserve from the tiniest insects to birds of prey.”

There are only 12 places available on the special walk and no dogs are allowed. To reserve your place contact the Saltwells Nature Reserve team on 01384 812795. The meeting point is Saltwells car park off Saltwells Lane.

The following day (Wednesday July 16) Wrens Nest Nature Reserve is holding a special flower and butterfly walk from 2pm until 4pm. The walk involves steep slopes and meets at Mons Hill College car park in Wrens Nest Road. Booking is essential on 01384 812785.

On Thursday July 17 there will be a wildlife walk at Fens Pool from 10am until 12.30pm taking in the population of water birds and those living in the surrounding grassland. To book a place contact 01384 812780. The walk meets at the wardens base at the Dell Stadium.
