ASIAN sportsmen from across the country will be visiting Dudley on Sunday to take part in the annual Asian games, which this year celebrates it’s 20th anniversary.

The Dudley Shazad Mela features various competitions in the traditional Asian sports including kabaddi, which is a mix of rugby and wrestling, and stonelifting.

Dudley strongman Shazada Saleem is currently the record holder of the stone lifting event, setting the current record of 201kg, which has remained unbroken for 23 years due to lack of competition.

This year as part of the milestone anniversary, the prize money will be given to all competitors participating in the category.

The event, which is annually organised by The Kashmir Youth Forum, was the idea of Chairman Mohammed Aurang Zeb who wanted to set up an event which could take children off the streets and off drugs and get them involved in the world of sport.

The Dudley team, who were last year’s champions, will be taking on teams from Keighley and Manchester.

The free sporting event will be held at Dudley College’s Castle View Campus, The Parade from 2pm.
