GORNAL residents will soon be able to shop at Sainsbury's as the new store gets set to open its doors tomorrow.

The store in Louise Street was taken over from Somerfield in May and now boasts a new bakery, fresh floral arrangement and an ATM.

Twenty-six shop assistants from Somerfield have also transferred to join the Sainsbury's team.

The new store will be opened at 9am in the morning, as long-serving assistant Celia Day will cut the ribbon to officially open the supermarket.

Mrs Day, from Gornal Wood, has recently retired after working at the Somerfield store for 20 years.

She will be joined by children from nearby Red Hall Primary School, who will all be presented with Active Kids equipment to use during PE lessons and playtimes.

Store manager, Eddie Gardner said: “We’re proud of our new store but the best part of opening is getting to know the local community. It’s been great meeting new people and we’re looking forward to making a positive difference. We’ve already started this process by working with Red Hall Primary and it’s great that kids from the school are going to liven up us oldies at the opening!”

The first customer in the store will also be presented with a bouquet of flowers from the manager.
