FIFTY-five new houses are set to be built on the current site of Sedgley’s Beacon Centre for the Blind, after council planners gave the go ahead.

Morris Homes Limited applied to Dudley Council to build the 31 three, four and five bedroom houses as well as 24 two bedroom flats on the charity’s Wolverhampton Road East site.

The land is currently housing a number of the Blind Centre’s buildings, which all date back to the 1960s and 1970s.

With the new Beacon Centre for the Blind nearing completion at the front of the site and the services soon transferring over to the new build, the old buildings are set to be demolished.

At Dudley Council’s Development Control Committee, members gave the green light to the housing plans after conducting a site visit.

They also approved plans for the houses to be served by a long cul-de-sac access road from the A459 and for the development to include 131 car parking spaces and 30 cycle stands.

The councillors unanimously agreed approval with the condition work should begin before June 1 2011.
