YOUNG cooks from a Lower Gornal primary school are celebrating after winning a regional cookathon competition.

Roberts Primary school’s Let’s Get Cooking club had almost 800 people involved in their cookathon event when they made a no pastry cheese pie.

Their all day cooking marathon saw every class involved in the challenge, helping them beat other entries from around the West Midlands.

Let’s Get Cooking, funded by the Big Lottery, is a national network of school-based cookery clubs and issued the challenge to rally as many people as possible to cook a healthy dish together.

The Roberts Street school cooking club were awarded £250 for their efforts.

School cooking club co-ordinator, Helen Moren, said: “We are absolutely delighted to have won regional top place in the cookathon. It was hard work but fantastic fun.

“We couldn’t have become regional winners without the help of everyone at school and those who cooked at home, so we owe a big thank you to every pupil, parent, teacher and helper who took part.”

As well as winning the top award for cooking, the school has also been awarded the Gold Award as part of the Dudley Food for Health scheme.

The award, from Dudley Council and Dudley Primary Care Trust, is given to premises which target 14 healthy option actions, including actively promoting healthy and nutritious eating, using reduced fats in foods and offering fruit, vegetables and a range of healthy drinks for children and staff.
