YOUNGSTERS unlocked secrets of the past as they took part in an archaeological dig at Priory Park.

Children from Priory Primary, Netherton CE, Church of England Primary of St Edmund and St John and St Joseph’s RC Primary schools all took part in the dig alongside experts from the University of Birmingham.

The event, which was led by Birmingham Archaeology, was the first dig to examine the priory’s archaeological remains since 1939 and included keyhole excavations, where the pupils inspected small one metre square areas around the historic ruins.

The dig was also organised as part of a Heritage Lottery Fund bid which, if successful, will see the park transformed and improved.

As part of the bid includes money for permanent lighting around the ruins, archaeologists have been digging trial pits to find the best positions for cables and uplighters.

Dudley Council has worked closely with the Friends of Priory Park on the multi-million pound plans, which could also see the establishment of an arboretum.

Other works could include the planting of tree avenues, repairs to path surfaces to allow better access, resurfacing of the five-a-side football pitch and bowling green and the demolition of the old toilet block and installation of new facilities.

Detailed stage two plans are currently being put together by planners and are expected to be submitted in March 2010.
