GREG Wright has revealed he will be stepping down as Himley CC captain at the end of the season.

Wright has decided to end a six year reign at Stourbridge Road as he is no longer able to give as much time to the role as he would like.

But he is determined his time as skipper will not end on a sour note as the club continues its battle against relegation from Birmingham Premier League.

Wright said: “It’s been six years and I have really enjoyed it. I have been proud to do the job.

“But I now have a young family and I’m unable to devote the time to the job that it needs.

“Having outside pressures does affect you and it has affected my batting and my form.

“I wanted to tell the club from very early on and I will be helping them find a successor.

“The club maybe needs a fresh approach and I hope to stay on as a player and continue in the quest to win the league.

“Obviously we must first make sure we are still in the top division next season.”

Himley have been boosted by the news they will not be docked ten points for breaching league disciplinary measures in last month’s one run defeat to Wellington.

Wright, Shafiq Ahmed and Stuart Wedge were all reported to the league by the umpires following incidents in the match.

The club held an internal disciplinary meeting where Wright was cleared of wrongdoing but warned to control his side. Ahmed and Wedge have served two and one match bans respectively.

The latter returned to take four wickets as Himley gained a valuable 13 points in their battle to beat the drop with a winning draw against Barnt Green.

Batting first, Himley made 190 with Chris Tranter (72) top scoring and Wright himself hitting 33.

Wedge then took 4-38 to rip through the home side’s top order as Barnt Green held on to draw.

Wright said the controversy off the pitch in recent weeks had helped to galvanise the side.

He said: “I think there were a few players, myself included, who needed a kick up the backside.

“The fact is we were not winning enough games and we knew we were in a dire position, it’s credit to the guys we have started to turn things around.

“It’s so easy to crumble.

“Confidence has started to come back into the batting and we are fielding a lot better.”
