A DUDLEY councillor is celebrating after his 12-month campaign to get safety measures on a busy Saltwells road has been successful.

Bryan Cotterill has been appealing to council officers for extra metal railings to be installed along Bowling Green Road and Saltwells Road as he argued children in his ward were “just as precious and likely to get run over as children from other areas in the borough.”

Currently there are only two small pieces of railing at the junction of the two main roads, which Mr Cotterill said made him “laugh out loud” when he first saw them after they were installed a year ago.

Mr Cotterill (pictured) said: “I asked for railings as the road is regularly used by children and parents attending Netherbrook Primary School and I did get them, but I couldn’t believe it when I saw them. I actually laughed out loud and asked where the rest were.”

He added: “It is a very, very busy corner and it is a joke to just have these little pieces stuck up, especially when places like Sedgley and Stourbridge are like a maze with an abundance of railings.”

After raising his concerns at numerous area committee meetings and full council meetings, the council has confirmed it will not only be improving the roadway but will also be installing a full crossing, which should be installed during October half term.

A council spokesman said: “The crossing has now been approved and we will endeavour to install it by the end of October.”

Mr Cotterill said: “This is desperately needed, no question about that. I have been pushing for this for many months, as those railings were just so silly. But I am delighted with the council’s decision.”
