HIMLEY skipper Greg Wright has called on his side to secure their Birmingham Premier League safety at the first attempt this Saturday.

Favourable results over the Bank Holiday weekend means the Stourbridge Road side head to league leaders Knowle and Dorridge knowing a positive result should see them mathematically safe.

Wright is eager to get safe as soon as possible to avoid the prospect of a high-stakes shootout against struggling Walsall in the final game.

He said: “We don’t want it to go that far.

“It will be a great shame for whoever does go down but we want to get it sorted as soon as possible.

“We have a decent record at K and D and because teams around us are playing each other we know a fairly decent performance should see us home.

“We aren’t looking at the table, all we want to do is get the points and get to safety.

“What we don’t want is to go into the final game needing a big performance or with everything on the line.”

Winning draws against Kenilworth and Smethwick brought a return of 30 points over the Bank Holiday to move Himley up to eighth in the table.

Wright was particularly pleased with the haul, after losing the toss and batting first in both games.

Harshad Patel and Ben Smith both hit 34 before TP Singh cracked an impressive 84 as Himley racked up 235-8 against Kenilworth on Saturday.

Stuart Wedge then took 3-12 in a fine spell as Himley restricted their visitors to just 63-4 from 37 rain curtailed overs.

On Monday, Patel hit 56 and Wedge 37 to provide the backbone for another strong batting display and a total of 221-7.

Singh demonstrated his prowess with the ball, taking 4-37 as Smethwick held on at 158-8.

Wright said: “We maximised the points we could get from the games and we are playing some really good stuff.

“It’s not really the time of year to start losing the toss, it is not easy with the early starts and you always have the worst of the conditions.

“It’s eight out of nine I’ve lost now so hopefully that luck will change soon.”

Wright, who will step down as captain at the end of the year, confirmed the club had yet to make a decision on who will succeed him.

He said: “With everything that’s gone on over the last couple of months we have put everything else on hold.

“All our efforts are concentrated on staying up.”
