DUDLEY North councillors have unanimously supported a alcohol exclusion zone for Lower Gornal.

Members of North Dudley Area Committee have agreed for the booze ban to cover the streets of Lower Gornal, The Straits, Cotwall End Valley, Gornal Wood, Ruiton and Coopers Bank - including Hunts Mill Nature Reserve.

A consultation process is still ongoing as part of the statutory process, with letters currently going out to every householder living in the designated ban area.

Residents are being asked for their views regarding the proposal, with all feedback set to be collated after January 10 when they will go to the Licensing and Safety Committee for consideration.

Speaking at the meeting, Phil Tart, Dudley North Area Liaison Officer, said feedback sent back already was very positive about the proposals.

Mr Tart, said: "My email box has been very busy about this, I think I have had about 110 emails received to date and all have been extremely supportive and think it is an excellent idea."

The ban has been proposed following increased calls to police regarding underage drinkers and drink-related anti-social behaviour.

If the green light is given, new rules will give Gornal officers more power, not only allowing them to confiscate alcohol being drunk in public places, but also providing them with the power of arrest if needed.
