DUDLEY Kingswinford made the most of a quick start as they got back to winning ways against Malvern.

The hosts had gone 27-0 up in less than half an hour with a brilliant display of attacking rugby but the visitors who were always dangerous with the ball in hand then scored a couple of tries, one either side of half time to put themselves right back into the game.

DK however soon regained their momentum to comfortably close out the game. The DK front five with skipper Ollie Shakespeare back from New Zealand, were the difference between the sides, the home pack were on top for most of the game and proved a little too strong for the visitors eight over the 80 minutes.

DK hit the ground running and after two minutes a Simon Fletcher penalty gave them a 3-0 lead.

Four minutes later it was increased to 10-0. A penalty catch and drive inside the Malvern 22, followed by a set scrum, saw Jon Higgins elude the Malvern cover for a smart try and Fletcher converted.

Malvern gradually settled down but fly half Adam Dixon missed a couple of kickable penalties. The visitors were to rue these missed opportunities as DK raced further ahead after 18 minutes when the pack destroyed a Malvern and Stefan Shillingford powerfully brushed off a couple of tackles to score near the posts.

When the visitor’s backs did get a little possession, they looked a very slick unit but DK were now playing some seriously good rugby.

A third try duly arrived after 21 minutes. A wonderful handling move over 50 plus metres involving Duncan Chance, Jon Tideswell and Shaun Griffiths was finished off by Ian Langford.

It then got even better as the richly talented Matt Farrington scored the try of the game after 26 minutes to earn the fourth try bonus point.

Malvern had not had much of a look in up to this point but they got one back as good handling at pace after 29 minutes saw the DK cover exposed as full back Luke Milton raced in at the corner to make it 27-5 at the break.

They kept up the momentum when the second half began and on 44 minutes Chris Griffiths was driven over for a try following a penalty lineout catch and drive. Adam Dixon converted to make the score 27-12.

But the glimmer of hope was quickly snuffed out as DK got a fifth try after 50 minutes. There did not seem a lot on when Jon Higgins took the ball just outside the Malvern 22 but his perfectly judged, delayed pass was just enough to unhinge the visitor’s cover and allow Shillingford to thunder through and score.

Malvern then had to endure a further period of pressure but undeterred, they kept plugging away and were eventually rewarded when scrum half Thomas Longley threaded a ball through the DK cover after 77 minutes for full back Milton to run onto and record his second try of the day.

There was still time for a little more drama as Malvern, who had been chasing the game throughout, went for broke, attacking from behind their goal line. They had an overlap and a successful final pass might have seen a length of the pitch try for the visitors but Tideswell stretched up to intercept and complete the scoring.
