DYNAMIC Dudley councillor Steve Waltho is up to his charity tricks again - this time he’s planning a 100-mile walk for Queen, country and a host of causes close to his heart.

The 56-year old St Thomas’s ward councillor, has secured a place to take part in a unique charity walk, organised by the Long Distance Walkers Association, linking the Olympics and the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.

Cllr Waltho said he’s over the moon to have won a place in the event - dubbed the Games 100 - which will take die-hard walkers on a 48-hour hike from London’s Olympic Stadium via various Olympic sites before winding up in Windsor.

The super-fit father-of-two, who had to complete a 50-mile qualifying walk in 24 hours in Yorkshire to be accepted into the event, said: “I feel quite privileged to be taking part.”

Marking the 40th anniversary of the LDWA, of which Steve is a member, the event starts in Hackney, East London, on Saturday June 2 and takes in various sites in the capital before heading into Surrey and finishing in Royal Windsor on Monday June 4 - the day before the official Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Holiday which Steve hopes to celebrate with his ward constituents in Dudley.

The adventurous cllr, who is no stranger to charity challenges - having completed numerous fundraising walking, cycling and running stunts over the last 40 years, said the LDWA 100 events are particularly gruelling.

He said: “There are very few events I have ever failed but about 25 years ago this was one of them in Snowdonia.

“Then in 1995 I managed to complete the Shropshire 100 in 47 hours with very badly blistered feet and almost hallucinating after two days without sleep.”

Cllr Waltho, who lives in Wordsley, hopes his efforts will help coin in sponsorship money for Dudley’s Action Heart charity, Leukaemia Care, West Midlands Lupus Group and Acorns Childrens Hospice.

He will also be raising cash for the new Mayor of Dudley’s chosen charities - Dudley Diabetic Association and Dudley Stroke Association.
