A LATE try condemned Dudley Kingswinford to another frustrating home defeat.

Ross White went over for the visitors with two minutes to go and Tom Outram then kicked the conversion to snatch victory.

It is the second time in three home games this season DK have blown a lead late on and their fourth defeat in five National League Two North.

This was the first ever league encounter between the clubs and it was a good spectacle with both sides endeavouring to play open rugby at every opportunity in front of a large and enthusiastic Heathbrook crowd of well over 400.

There were three changes to last week’s side at Mowden Park, with Simon Fletcher and Dan Shakespeare returned at full back and prop respectively for Rhys Pritchard and James Parkes, who moved to hooker in place of Matt Humphries.

The early exchanges were quite even but the Tiger’s backs looked very sharp and an infringement from DK allowed Outram to knock over an early penalty.

DK continued to make the running however and after managing to hang on to the ball following a third lineout, attacked the Tiger’s line.

The ball was flung out to Stefan Shillingford who shrugged off a couple of tackles to stretch for the try. But the lead was shortlived as another Outram penalty put Sheffield 6-5 up after 20 minutes.

Bown missed a penalty for the hosts as further errors prevented them from scoring until two minutes before the break, when they re-took the lead with a delightful try.

Simon Fletcher fielded a high kick in and broke at pace, firing a longish pass to Matt Farrington who rounded at least three defenders in a 50 metre dash down the touchline, before flicking out a scoring pass to the supporting Joe Carpenter. Bown converted for DK to lead 12-6 but another Outram kick narrowd the deficit to just three at the break.

Sheffield were on top at the start of the second period and Outram missed a chance to level the scores.

DK defended well but a poor defensive kick lead to Steve Walker scoring for the visitors to put them 14-12 up.

The Tigers then lost replacement forward Callum McKenzie (60m) and scrum half Alex Drage (63m) to yellow cards for a late tackle and slowing the ball respectively. DK immediately took advantage. Farrington was just bundled into touch at the corner but Jon Tideswell stole the Tiger’s throw for the ball to be quickly spun out to Stefan Shillingford who, in typical style, battered through to the line.

Bown’s conversion made it 19-14 to DK with 15 minutes to play.

That should really have been that but the 13 men of the Tigers put in a huge effort as DK’s lineout continued to flounder.

With six minutes to go, Tideswell was yellow carded for a late tackle and with Sheffield back to full strength, the pressure on the hosts began to build.

White was then driven over with two to play, with Outram nailing the crucial conversion to devastate the hosts.
