COUNCILLORS are being asked to reject plans for an off-licence in Halesowen after residents raised fears over parking and late night drinking.

Dudley licensing committee is to meet next week to decide whether it will grant an alcohol licence to a convenience store on the junction of Manor Lane and Shenstone Avenue.

Midland Express Ltd  is applying for permission to sell beers and spirits seven days a week from 9.30am to 11pm.

But the application is being opposed by nearby residents who have raised concerns about parking on the busy street and the late opening times.

They are being supported by Halesowen South ward councillors who have formally objected to the application.

Councillor Ray Burston said he was opposing the licence after residents voiced their concerns over traffic problems.

Cllr Burston said: “We are standing up for the residents’ concerns, particularly the ones in Shenstone Avenue who are very concerned about additional parking and that is the principle reason why we are opposing it.”

He said the late night opening was creating fears of anti-social behaviour and nuisance,  adding if a licence was a granted the hours should be ‘drastically reduced’.

He added: “Certainly the hours need to be limited but, added with the concerns around parking, residents are very concerned about this going-ahead."

The licensing committee has the power to reject the application or place conditions on a licence including limiting the hours alcohol can be sold, subject to an appeal to a magistrates court.

Licensing councillors will make a decision at their meeting on June 11.
