A BIG-hearted mum will shave off all her hair to raise money to provide invaluable support to families who have experienced the heartbreak of a stillbirth.

Clare Churm, aged 29, from Dudley, will brave the shave to raise money for Sands, a charity that supports families dealing with stillbirths and neonatal death.

She aims to raise money to fund a number of 'memory boxes', which will be filled with priceless mementoes for families to keep of their babies.

Clare suffered the heartbreaking loss of her baby son Michael-John, 'MJ', in 2015, after a scan at six months revealed his heart was no longer beating.

Clare explained how there had been no signs that anything was wrong during her pregnancy, so the awful news came as a complete shock.

Two days later Clare had to give birth to her son in Russells Hall Hospital, an experience which left her and her partner Chris 'devastated'.

Clare said: "I didn’t know what was was going on, not even that I had to give birth as it is not something that you ever think will happen to you. I was in total shock."

Before leaving the hospital Clare was given a box by her midwife made by the charity Sands.

When she opened it on her return home, she found it was full of mementos of MJ, such as poems, footprints, handprints and photos.

She explained that the photos were particularly special, as in the trauma after the birth she had not been able to take any photographs of her son.

Clare added: "When it happens you don’t know what the right thing is to do. It is amazing what the charity does."

Along with the memory boxes, Sands also works to offer practical support for bereaved families and carries out research to reduce the number of babies dying.

The 29-year-old will now undergo a complete head shave in September, a major feat as she says her long locks are her 'crowning glory'.

Clare set herself a target to raise £150 in order to fund seven memory boxes but has impressively already smashed the target only two days after launching the appeal.

The shave will take place on September 1 where Clare will be joined by her partner Chris, three-year-old daughter Emily and family and friends at a party in honour of MJ and how his memory will live on to help others.

Clare said: "For years I couldn’t say his name, now I want to do something for him and keep his memory alive.

"I’m shaving my hair off, not hiding behind it."
