DUDLEY Council has appointed Martin Samuels as its next strategic director for people.

Martin, who is currently director for adults and wellbeing at Herefordshire Council, is set to join the authority in April.

Set to replace popular Tony Oakman who has been appointed chief executive of Bolton Council - Martin will be responsible for delivering high quality services on initiatives to support children, adults and communities.

He will oversee the continued transformation of children’s and adults’ services and work to develop closer ties with partner organisations and community groups in the borough.

Councillor Patrick Harley, leader of Dudley Council, said: “We are delighted to welcome Martin to Dudley Council.

"He brings a wealth of experience and a strong track record in delivering in adult social care, public health and wellbeing and children’s services.

“Protecting the vulnerable, promoting independence and keeping people well is at the heart of everything we do.

“His strategic vision and a grasp of the issues across the whole portfolio will be a great asset to the council as we continue to improve and modernise services, making a positive difference to the people of Dudley.”

Martin, who has more than 25 years of public service experience, said: “I am honoured and excited to be joining Dudley Council. Having worked in the Black Country before, I value the energy and good humour of the residents.

"I look forward to building on the good work that’s already been done and being part of the future for the borough.

“A constant theme throughout my career has been a passion to work with local communities to help vulnerable residents live fulfilling lives.”  

Martin's appointment is expected to be officially approved by the authority at the next full council meeting on February 19.
